I was just listening to this album for about the fourth time today, while doing chores, thinking, "this might actually be a monumental masterpiece, not just another reliably good Deerhoof album." Then I saw this post in my inbox. Thanks for your notes!
Same same same. Definitely strikes me as one of the best albums of the decade. Gonna take a while to digest. Haven't felt this way about a record in a while!!
Oh, thank you so much! I realized, as I was listening to the album for the second time, that while I often take notes while reading, I seldom take notes while listening to music. Thank you for your encouragement... maybe there will be more of this.
Thanks for bringing Deerhoof to our (my) attention. I'd heard the band's name mentioned before (elsewhere), but never bothered to check them out. They're indeed very quirky and creative—not at all what I was expecting (from just having heard of the band name). Prior to actually hearing their music, I was sort of expecting some sort of jangly punk-folk thing (I guess). The band's name is a total misdirection (it seems to me). They have more in common with Radiohead and King Crimson than anything remotely agrarian or folksy. Surprised, and pleased.
So glad to be of service! Yeah, they were a big part of my musical life 15 years ago, and then I somehow stopped tracking their new releases. Now I'm thinking that it might be worth going back and filling in the gaps... (I remember loving 'Friend Opportunity' back in the day.) Thank you as always for reading!!
I see that they have quite a back catalog as well—including a collaboration with Wadada Leo Smith (the first few minutes of which, I very much enjoyed). Although my ears thank you, my PayPal account will not thank you for all of these newly discovered purchases I am going to have to make. :-)

This might be the best review I have ever read. I've listened to this album multiple times, but this expands the experience.

You beat me to it! And captured it perfectly.
